03 — Principal Investments

A selective programme of co-founding in Japan.

Matrix Japan invests in or co-founds companies that contribute meaningfully to Japan's economy and society — undertaken only where the firm has conviction in both founders and mission.

Current Holding

J-Biosciences K.K.

The problem

Japanese universities, pharmaceutical companies and biotechs hold some of the best research in the world, but do not always have the balance-sheet strength or the human resources to develop every asset to commercialisation.

The opportunity

Valuable assets — often deprioritised for strategic, portfolio-balance or pipeline-sequencing reasons — sit idle inside originating institutions despite genuine clinical and commercial potential.

Matrix Japan's role

Co-founder of J-Biosciences K.K., with Jerrod Stelli serving as Representative Director(代表取締役). The firm has provided approximately 50% of seed capital to date and continues to lead strategic direction and capital formation.

Business model

— In-license or acquire deprioritised assets from Japanese originators
— Develop assets lean and globally through outsourced clinical work
— Provide flexible structures, including reacquisition rights for the originator
— Focus on assets with clear clinical and commercial potential that need a dedicated home
